This part of the coast is known for its reliable thermal winds, and today did not disappoint as the Laser Masters sailors took to the water for races 3 and 4 of the twelve race series.<\/p>\n<p>As anticipated, the day\u2019s first race was started in 8 knots winds just after the scheduled 1 p.m. start time. Also, as anticipated, the wind quickly built to 15 knots by the end of the race and held for the rest of the afternoon. Banderas Bay dished out ideal sailing conditions with a nice short chop to keep things interesting upwind, and a larger ocean swell to add to the excitement of the downwind legs.<\/p>\n<p>Although the conventional wisdom in a west coast sea breeze is to favor the right side of the course, in today\u2019s races sailors needed to protect the middle of the course in order to reach the top. According to Canadian, Al Clark, \u201cThere were definitely lanes of pressure out there and I mainly tried to play the middle of the upwind legs. The left definitely paid off late in the day. Nick Page went left of the second upwind leg of the last race and made big gains. I was able to cross him and hold on for the win, but it looked close for a while.\u201d Clark won the day\u2019s final race and currently sits in third place in the 39-boat Grand Masters Division behind New Zealand\u2019s Nick Page and leader Gavin Dagley from Australia.<\/p>\n<p>In a repeat of yesterday\u2019s performance, Australia\u2019s Mark Bethwaite scored a perfect day with two more bullets in the Great Grand Masters Division. According to Bethwaite, \u201cThis place is sensational! There\u2019s a great sea breeze that fills in every day and a nice chop to slash through to windward and ride downwind.\u201d Following Bethwaite, Texan, Doug Peckover, found his consistency with a pair of second place finishes to hold second place overall.<\/p>\n<p>In the Masters Division, Brett Beyer of Australia extended his lead with two more first place finishes. But close behind are American, Ernesto Rodriquez, and Kiwi, Andrew Dellabarca, tied for second place with 9 points each.<\/p>\n<p>Racing continues tomorrow in the 12-race series. If two races are completed tomorrow, Wednesday will be a lay-day to give the sailors (and the regatta organizers) a much deserved rest before the conclusion of the event.<\/p>\n<p>First held in 1980, the Laser Masters World Championship is organized annually for sailors age 35 and over. Sailors compete in various divisions based on their ages: Apprentice Masters \u2013 age 35 to 44, Masters \u2013 age 45 to 54, Grand Masters \u2013 age 55 to 64, and Great Grand Masters \u2013 age 65 and over. Two races were completed in the Laser Standard Masters World Championships under sunny skies with wind ranging from 9 to 16 knots.<\/p>\n<p>Race one was started in 9 knot winds from 210 degrees \u2013 south of the typical sea breeze direction. As expected the wind increased in velocity and clocked right during the race, which rewarded those who chose the right hand side of the course.<\/p>\n<p>Race two was started in 13 knots and soon built to 16 knots by the finish. Unlike the first race, the right side was not favored this time. According to Australian sailor, Brett Beyer, \u201cThe left side was definitely favored in the second race. I worked the middle left on the first beat and then stayed left again on the second upwind leg.\u201d The strategy worked for Beyer, who is the defending champion in the Grand Masters Division, as he posted two first place finishes to lead his division.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Australian Mark Bethwaite also had a perfect day on the water with two bullets in the Great Grand Masters Division. \u201cIt was great sailing out there!\u201d said Bethwaite. Like Beyer, Bethwaite is the defending world champion in his age division and leads former Masters champion, Doug Peckover, by four points.<\/p>\n<p>In the Grand Masters Division, two sailors are tied for the lead with four points after the first day of racing.
