Bahamas conditions set in on\u00a0day three of the Star Sailors League Finals with 12-18 knots winds\u00a0from the prevailing northeast-easterly direction. With this wind direction the race committee moved the course\u00a0out of Montagu Bay, where there were bigger waves, with limited protection from the full force of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

Despite being\u00a0dominated by Olympic Finn sailors, the day ended with a\u00a0new leader in Mark Mendelblatt and crew Brian Fatih, who now lead\u00a0Robert Scheidt and Henry Boening\u00a0by a mere point, going into the last day of the Qualifiers.<\/p>\n

Fatih, who has sailed with Mendelblatt since they teamed up for London 2012, observed: \u201cWe\u2019re fortunate to be in this position:\u00a0Robert is an amazing sailor, the benchmark so if you can stay up with him, you\u2019re happy.\u201d However following their 15-4-4 score today, gaining the lead was a surprise. \u201cIt was a struggle – we didn\u2019t feel great on the boat.\u00a0We weren\u2019t terrible, it just wasn\u2019t as smooth as normal.\u201d However while today\u2019s first race became their discard, Scheidt and Boening had to count their 12th<\/sup>\u00a0in race two.<\/p>\n

It may also have been due to the more choppy conditions. \u201cIt was a battle\u00a0trying to keep it in the groove downwind,\u201d Fatih continued. \u201cUsually from this direction the left is pretty solid, but it was back and forth\u00a0with some light spots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Top scoring helm\u00a0today\u00a0was\u00a0Finn sailor,\u00a0was\u00a0Jorge Zarif,\u00a0the 2013 Finn Gold Cup winner and this year\u2019s Star World Champion, and\u00a0Pedro Trouche, scoring 4-1-2 today elevated the young Brazilians into\u00a0third overall.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the free pumping conditions today\u00a0– I am from the Finn and that is one of themost important things we do,\u201d Zarif explained. \u201cWe tried to pump and rock as much as we could, although you have to play the waves and shifts as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their race win today came after taking the lead on the second beat after benefitting from a favourable shift on the left. \u201cThere was a huge shift there because of the geography,\u201d said Zarif. \u201cBut in the third race there was a huge right. There weren\u2019t any clouds saying that.\u00a0Sometimes you have to follow your gut.\u201d<\/p>\n

Losing the race to Zarif was Kiwi-Anglo duo,\u00a0Hamish Pepper and Steve Mitchell, who had done a fine job\u00a0recovering from their dismasting in yesterday\u2019s breezy last race. \u201cIt required a bit of effort to tidy up the boat and get rid of all the damage and to find a rig suitable,\u201d admitted Pepper. \u201cWe finished it off this morning and our timing pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of their day Pepper, the 2006 Star World Champion, was pleased. \u201cWe had two good races – an 8th<\/sup>\u00a0and a second.\u201d Of race two: \u201cOn the second beat we played the middle because it was getting shifty. There were a lot of gains and losses. You couldn\u2019t protect both sides and in the end it favoured the guys on the left.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Finn Gold Cup winner, Hungarian Zsombor Berecz posted today\u2019s second best score\u00a0\u2013 3-6-9 with\u00a0Czech four time Finn Masters World Champion Michael Maier\u00a0as crew, leaving them\u00a010th<\/sup>\u00a0overall. This was despite not finishing yesterday\u2019s last race when they broke a spreader, turning their mast to spaghetti, requiring them to fit a replacement overnight. \u201cOn the water sometimes we had very good speed, but not always. We\u2019ve only had five days on the boat \u2026\u201d said Berecz. \u201cDownwind we were playing it quite safe. We didn\u2019t put the mast forward enough, because we didn\u2019t want to break it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winner of today\u2019s first race were Star veterans France\u2019s Xavier Rohart and Pierre-Alexis Ponsot,\u00a0who also benefitted from the left side of the first beat. They lead at the top mark and then were never challenged. \u201cIt is a good to have\u00a0a good plan and to be able to run with it to the end, to play the shifts and be a little bit in front of the pack\u2026it was really a\u00a0text book race,\u201d said Rohart.<\/p>\n

While many found fortune on the top left of the course, in today\u2019s final race\u00a0Brazilian veteran Lars Grael and Samuel Gon\u00e7alves repeated their tactic from yesterday\u2019s second race, by going hard right, with the same outcome \u2013\u00a0victory. This has raised them to seven overall.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow is the final day of Qualifiers at the Star Sailors League Finals\u00a0and the target is to\u00a0finish within the top 10 to progress through to Saturday\u2019s Quarter Final. As Zarif observed: \u201cWe have four races to go. It is a long way. Let\u2019s see what happens tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0At present any of the top 22 teams could still make the cut.<\/p>\n

The winner of the Qualifiers fast tracks directly to the Final Race, while second place heads directly to the Semi Final. Those that finish the Qualifiers in third to tenth places, get to race in the Quarter Finals. The top five Quarter Finallists progress through to the Semi Final. The top three from the Semi Finals join the winner of the Qualifiers in the Finals.
\nWinner of the\u00a0Star\u00a0Sailors\u00a0League\u00a0Finals receives US$ 40,000 from a prize pot of US$ 200,000.<\/p>\n
