KINGSTON —
Great Britain’s Nick Thompson is primed to claim his first Laser World title as the championship sails into its final races Wednesday.
The 29-year-old Thompson had the best three-race performance in Tuesday’s Gold Series racing on the Lake Ontario course set up to the southwest of Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.
Thompson holds a 20-point lead over Australia’s Tom Burton. The 53 sailors in the Gold Series now have a total of 10 races in — seven from the qualifying round and three in the final. The 10-race total is important because it allows the sailors a second drop race.
That’s important for Thompson, who has been consistent throughout the championship. He has only one finish outside the top 10 — a 24th, which is one of his drop races — and will use a seventh from Tuesday’s first race as his 2nd drop. Thompson has no gold but four medals from four previous Laser World Champs.
Austrailan’s Burton, with a second place in Tuesday’s final race, moved into second place with 47 points.
Philipp Buhl of Sonthenofen, Germany, is third with 52 points.
Tuesday’s races were won by three different sailors. Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic winning the first and coming third in the last. In the middle race he was 35th! A good indication of how easy it is to be pushed to the back in a world-calibre fleet.

I gårdagens två efterföljande race blev Jesper 39:a och 46:a.
